pfSense Fundamentals and Practical Application Course

Our pfSense Fundamentals and Practical Application course is two full day sessions, covering all the most-widely used portions of the base system. Common usage scenarios, deployment considerations, step by step configuration guidance, and best practices will be covered for many features.

Course Content

Introduction

Project history and overview, hardware selection, etc.

pfSense, The Basics

We cover installation, configuration, GUI, backup, restore, upgrades and interfaces

The Firewall

Basic rules, aliases, best practices, interface grouping, and advanced firewall options

NAT 101

Interaction with firewall rules, port forwards, 1:1 NAT, and outbound network address translation

Services

DHCP and relay, DNS forwarding, dynamic DNS, SNMP, NTP server, Wake on LAN

VPN

Overview, selecting the appropriate VPN, remote access with IPsec, OpenVPN and PPTP, Site to Site with IPsec and OpenVPN

Prerequisites

Attendees should have a basic understanding of networking and firewalls. No prior knowledge with pfSense is necessary.

OS: Windows, OS X, Linux*
Browser: Google Chrome (v39+), Internet Explorer 11, Safari, Firefox 12
Installed Software: Adobe Flash, OpenVPN Client (PC or Mac), VNC client**, an SSH client.

* Some linux systems have problems with audio. Because this is an interactive class, Linux users must ensure that their audio is fully functional
** OS X users may use the built-in VNC client in Finder (Command-K and vnc://user@IP). Other free PC options are UltraVNC, RealVNC, etc.

pfSense Advanced Application Course

Our pfSense Advanced Application course is one full day session presented immediately following the Fundamentals and Practical Application, covering the advanced topics of Multi-WAN, VLAN's, High Availability (HA) and other essentials. This class is designed for advanced users and the configurations will be demonstrated in a live lab environment.

Course Content

Multi-WAN

Overview, best practices, failover and load balancing, policy routing, advanced options

VLANs

Switch configuration, firewall configuration.

High Availability

Overview, network design considerations, basic CARP configuration, multi-WAN, multi-LAN

Miscellaneous Topics

Bridging, captive portal, system monitoring, package system overview.

Prerequisites

Must be signed up or have completed pfSense Fundamentals and Practical Application course BEFORE signing up for the Advanced.
